How to Dress as a Busy Mum and Look Put Together

Most mornings, getting dressed comes last, after breakfast, lost shoes and book bags. I work with a lot of mums, and the question I hear most isn't "what's in fashion?" but "how do I look like myself again when I only have five minutes?" This guide is my practical answer.

The short answer: to dress well as a busy mum, keep a small set of comfortable, washable pieces in two or three colours that all go together. Choose one everyday formula (for example, stretch jeans, a soft knit and a structured jacket), wear shoes you can walk in all day, and add one finishing touch such as earrings, a belt or a scarf. That looks put together in five minutes and still feels like you.

How to dress as a mum and still feel like yourself

Becoming a mum changes your days, and very often your wardrobe stops making sense. The clothes you loved may not suit how you live now, and the comfortable things you reach for can leave you feeling a little invisible. You don't have to choose between the two.

  • Start with what you actually do. Look at a normal week: school runs, the park, the office, a weekend lunch. Your wardrobe should reflect that week, not the life you had before or the one you see on Instagram.
  • Choose a colour story. Two or three neutrals (navy, camel, grey, cream or black) plus one or two colours that make you look awake. When everything goes together, any combination works, even half asleep at 7am.
  • Keep one thing that is purely you. A red lip, a leopard-print scarf, gold hoops. It's the detail that stops an outfit feeling like a uniform.
  • Dress for your shape today. Buy for the size and shape you are now, in cuts that skim rather than cling. Clothes that fit properly are the quickest route to looking put together.

How to look put together as a mum, with no time

Looking put together has little to do with expensive clothes. It comes down to a few small details, and these are the ones I rely on with my clients:

  • Fit first. Trousers at the right length and a jacket that fits at the shoulder look polished, even with trainers.
  • Add a third piece. Jeans and a T-shirt is an outfit; add a blazer, a trench, a long cardigan or a utility jacket and it becomes a look.
  • Tuck it in. A loose front tuck (the French tuck) shows your waist and lengthens your legs in two seconds.
  • Choose fabrics that forgive. Ponte, jersey, crêpe and cotton blends with a little stretch resist creases, so you can skip the iron.
  • Pick one accessory the night before. Leave a belt, a scarf or a pair of earrings next to your bag and there is nothing to decide in the morning.
  • Plan outfits, not pieces. On Sunday evening, put together three outfits for the week. It takes ten minutes and saves you every morning after. A small capsule wardrobe that works for your lifestyle makes this even easier.

Comfortable clothes for mums that still look stylish

Comfort is non-negotiable when you are lifting, bending and walking all day. The trick is to choose comfortable clothes with some structure, so they keep their shape and look intentional rather than thrown on.

  • Stretch jeans in a straight or wide leg, which stay comfortable when you sit on the floor.
  • Pull-on wide-leg trousers in a smart fabric: they feel like joggers and look like tailoring.
  • Fine knits and good T-shirts in cotton or merino, which wash well and layer easily.
  • A midi dress or skirt with trainers or boots, easy to move in when you are crouching down or chasing small people.
  • Leather-look leggings with a long jumper: as comfortable as leggings, but much sharper.
  • Shoes you can walk miles in. White leather trainers, loafers, ankle boots and flat knee-high boots cover almost every day.
  • A cross-body bag, so your hands stay free.

Sounds like you? Styling For Mums could help.

If you would like help working out what suits you now, that is exactly what I do in Styling for Mums: we look at your shape, your colours and your days, then shop together in central London or Oxford for pieces that work.

Busy mum outfits for the school run and the playground

Here are three casual outfits you can put on in five minutes:

  1. Utility jacket, printed T-shirt, light jeans and white trainers. Easy, washable and smart enough for a coffee after drop-off.
  2. Leather jacket, printed midi skirt and lace-up boots. Feminine but practical, so you can still sit on a park bench. Add a belt if you like to show your waist.
  3. Leather-look leggings, a soft jumper, a smart coat and trainers. Do a French tuck at the front to define your waist and lengthen your legs.
Two casual looks: an olive utility jacket with a printed tee, light jeans and white trainers, and a leather jacket with a leopard-print midi skirt and lace-up boots

For the playground, think washable and layered: a quilted jacket or a long cardigan over a T-shirt copes with sun, wind and sticky hands, and comes off easily when you warm up pushing the swings.

Working mum outfits that take five minutes

Whether you are in the office every day or a couple of days a week, these three looks are smart but quick:

  1. Printed blouse, well-cut jeans and ballet flats. Add a tweed or tailored blazer if your workplace is smart casual.
  2. Striped shirt, navy flared trousers and a contrast belt, with loafers, for a more formal dress code.
  3. A matching co-ord, such as a checked blazer and trousers, with a simple top and a structured bag. A co-ord is the fastest outfit there is: two pieces, already matched.
Three mirror-selfie outfits: a printed blouse with jeans, a striped shirt with navy flared trousers and a burgundy belt, and a checked co-ord with a cream bag

If you are going back to work after maternity leave, your old work clothes may no longer feel right. Start with one blazer, one pair of trousers and two tops that work with what you already own, and build from there.

Easy hairstyles for busy mums

Your hair can do as much as your clothes to make you feel put together, and none of these takes more than a minute:

  • A sleek low ponytail with a centre parting looks deliberate with jeans or tailoring.
  • A twist in a claw clip takes ten seconds and works for the school run and the office.
  • A loose plait keeps your hair away from little hands and looks good on second-day hair.
  • A cut that dries well on its own. Ask your hairdresser for a style that works when you let it air-dry, not only when it has been blow-dried.

Why making time for your style matters

Taking ten minutes for yourself in the morning isn't vain. When you like what you see in the mirror, you start the day with more confidence and feel less frazzled. You are also showing your children that looking after yourself matters. And it reminds you that you are still you, not only someone's mum.

Busy mum style: your questions answered

What should a busy mum wear every day?

A simple formula: stretch jeans or wide-leg trousers, a soft knit or a good T-shirt, a jacket or cardigan as a third piece, and comfortable trainers or boots. Keep everything in colours that go together so any combination works.

How can I look put together as a mum with no time?

Focus on fit, add a third piece, do a quick French tuck and choose one accessory the night before. Planning three outfits on a Sunday removes most of the morning decisions.

What are the most comfortable clothes for mums that still look stylish?

Pull-on trousers in smart fabrics, stretch jeans, cotton or merino knits, midi dresses, leather-look leggings, and comfortable trainers, loafers or ankle boots. Choose pieces with some structure so comfort never looks sloppy.

Can a personal stylist help mums find their style again?

Yes. As a Personal Shopper & Stylist, I help mums work out what suits their shape and their life now, then we shop together for a wardrobe that works on the busiest days.

If you are a busy mum who has felt a bit lost in your wardrobe since having a baby, you are not alone, and you don't have to work it out by yourself. Have a look at Styling for Mums and let's find your style again, together.

What mums say about working with me

Rebecca Rama

I booked a personal shopping package with Maria as I was preparing to return to work postpartum and felt completely unsure about what suited my body or what my style even was anymore. From the start, Maria was incredibly thoughtful and thorough. Our initial call helped her really understand what I was looking for, and I felt listened to straight away. We then spent a half day shopping in London, and she found some beautiful pieces that work perfectly for everyday wear but can also be dressed up when needed. What I appreciated most was that she encouraged me to try things I would never have picked for myself and they ended up being some of my favourite items. I’m so happy with what I’ve come away with and feel much more confident in my style. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Maria and will absolutely return when I need a refresh. Thank you, Maria!

Reggie M

I had been in a fashion rut going back to work after maternity leave and found Maria through a quick Google. Maria spent 3 hours with me shopping and I learned soooo much! She taught me how to add a bit of a flair to a basic look, how to dress for my body shape (I had been doing it all wrong!), and what colours best complement my skin. Highly recommend for all, but especially new mums looking to add a bit more style after getting out of the newborn phase!

Rachel-Anne Rose

Maria helped me to figure out my shape and what works best for it in my postpartum era. Shopping with her allowed me to learn what works and what doesn’t and what to look out for when searching for quality pieces that help me look on trend without being too trendy and dress my age without being too matronly. I’m grateful for her advice and came away with the foundations of a new wardrobe that I actually want to wear and feel confident in.

Thank you Maria, what a delightful few hours. So fun and absolutely fascinating! I’m blown away by the shift in what actually suits me. I’ve learnt so much and in such wonderful company. As someone who’s a plus size now post kids I was struggling with my wardrobe. It feels like I’ve re-discovered my self, my potential. The clothes we found are gorgeous, comfortable and fun to wear. Love it!
